You've probably heard people talk about taking their cars in for a tune up. But what exactly happens when a garage performs a  Car Tune up Service? It can differ slightly from make and model, but ultimately, it is similar to tuning up an instrument. Different elements inside of the vehicle are inspected and altered slightly in order to improve the overall vehicle performance.

Spark Plug and Wiring

The spark plug is checked and often replaced. This improves the spark, which improves the flame of the engine, which improves fuel economy and acceleration. The timing is also corrected. Over time, the timing can be off, which results in the spark firing and the gas being released at the wrong time. It is a very minor correction that can have major ramifications on the performance of your vehicle.

The wiring of your vehicle is looked over as well. This isn't as big of a deal on modern vehicles, but on older vehicles, wiring can cause all sorts of problems (pop the hood of a mid-90s vehicle and you'll instantly understand).

Scan and Check

A large number of checks are performed during a modern tune up. This includes checking the battery voltage, scanning the computer for bad codes, looking at idle speed, and several other internal features that typically aren't looked into during an oil change or a brake job.

Replacements

The oxygen sensor may be replaced on your vehicle, it just depends on where you take it and what sort of vehicle you're driving. Beyond this, the fuel filter is removed and replaced, as is the PVC value, breather filter, air filter and other replaceable items. If the rotor/distributor cap needs replacing, this is done now as well during a tune up car service to improve how the vehicle runs.
