Do you need to know about what are the signs of a bad car starter? It is hard for the average driver to know what the problem is exactly as many of the symptoms of a bad car starter are similar to a failing alternator or a battery that is starting to die.

Most drivers know that the car starter is what starts your engine. But how, you ask? The starter is basically a small motor that is powered by a battery. Of course, the battery needs to receive a charge from the alternator. If any of these three components of the electrical system go bad, your car may be completely inoperable!

So if you’re wondering just what are the signs of a bad car starter, here are several obvious signs that you will notice:

  1. Unusual sounds. You may hear a clicking noise when you turn the key or push the start button. But, the starter could fail without making any sound at all.
  2. Only the dashboard lights come on. If only the dashboard lights come on when you try to start the motor, more than likely the starter is the problem.
  3. The engine doesn’t start. If your engine won’t start even after using jumper cables, unfortunately, you will need to call a tow truck and head to your auto shop for professional help.
  4. Your car is smoking. Because the starter is part of the electrical system, it is subject to blown fuses and short circuits. If you have tried several times to start your car, the starter can overheat, producing smoke.
  5. The starter is covered with oil. Take a look at the starter. If it is covered with oil, your car has developed an oil leak.

Tip to Remember: The first time you notice any of the problems above, even if they are intermittent, have the starter, alternator, and battery inspected by a certified mechanic. Don’t wait until you are stranded in your driveway or a cold parking lot.
