After surviving a harsh winter, it is important to take care of any basic vehicle maintenance items so that you are ready for the hot days of summer ahead. Not only should you read the vehicle maintenance schedule listed in your owner’s manual, schedule a thorough inspection of your vehicle. This inspection will indicate if there are any problems that should be fixed as soon as possible.

So what is the most important maintenance for a car to survive summer? Here are eight tips that will ensure your vehicle is driving as safe as possible:

  • Car Battery—Make sure your battery is holding a good charge for the hot weather ahead. Clean any corrosion away from the posts and cable connections and the fluid level checked.
  • Wiper Blades—Wiper blades can wear out after only six months. If you notice streaks across the glass, replace the blades so you are prepared for those sudden summer rainstorms.
  • Lights—Make sure that your vehicle’s lights are working properly and that the lenses are clean. In case you get caught in the dark, you want to see and to be seen.
  • Oil and Filter—Make sure the oil is fresh and the right viscosity for warm weather. Remember to replace the oil filter too.
  • Radiator, Hoses, and Belts—Make sure there aren’t any cracks or leaks in the radiator and hoses. Ask your mechanic to make sure you have the correct ratio of coolant and water in the radiator.
  • Tires—Keep the right air pressure in your tires, have them rotated about every 6,000 miles, and check the alignment, especially before leaving on a summer road trip. Inspect the rubber for cuts or holes that may need to be repaired.
  • Brakes—Have your brakes inspected before a summer road trip, especially if you start to feel unusual vibrations, hear squealing, or if the brake pedal feels “soft.”

Don’t Forget the Emergency Kit: Always carry a supply of water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, jack and spare tire, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.
