According to Car and Driver, your breaks are critical to safely driving your car, but they can wear out quickly if you do a lot of driving. There are some signs you should be aware of that will indicate that your brake pads and/or brake rotors need to be replaced.

When Should You Replace Your Brake Pads?

Most auto repair shops recommend you replace your brake pads every 25,000 to 65,000 miles. This isn't a hard rule, however. How often will depend on the type of vehicle you drive and how you drive your vehicle. Your driving style can also make them last longer or shorten their lifespan.

Some of the biggest signs that you need to replace your brake pads include:

  • Grinding noises
  • Squealing
  • Vibrations
  • Audible alerts
  • Brake warning light
  • Car pulls to one side when braking
  • Pads worn down to 3 to 4 mm or less

Do You Need to Replace the Brake Rotors?

If you have driven too long on faulty brake pads, you may find that you also need to replace the brake rotors. If this happens, you will notice these warning signs:

  • The driver feels a vibration in the steering wheel or brake pedal when braking.
  • The brakes sound loud and noisy when braking.
  • A mechanic may notice cracking or warping in the rotor.

If something has you wondering when should you replace your brake pads or rotors, you may want to take your car in to be checked.
