Many drivers may not think too much about the radiator in their vehicle until they see the needle on the instrument panel edging into the hot zone, or even more drastic, see steam coming from the hood of their car. How do you know when your radiator is bad, resulting in a costly radiator repair?

If you believe you are having radiator problems, have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible by a certified mechanic. Here are a few thoughts about a failing radiator:

  • If there is coolant (it could be green, pink, or orange in color) on the garage floor underneath your vehicle, you may have a leak in the radiator. You may also notice a sweet smell.
  • If the coolant level drops too low, a low coolant light will come on and you will see the temperature gauge rising, indicating that your engine is overheating.
  • Radiator leaks and cracks are serious and should be repaired by a certified mechanic. Depending on the severity of the leak or crack, the area can be sealed, or you may actually need to replace the radiator.

Driving with low coolant is hazardous, as your engine will be prone to overheating. If you notice your engine is overheating while driving, pull over immediately and let it cool down. You should call a tow truck to get your car to your auto shop.

Remember: For your vehicle to remain a reliable source of transportation, have the radiator inspected periodically for leaks or cracks. Don’t neglect needed radiator repair!
