Winter’s cold and icy temperatures are knocking at the door! An important part of getting ready for winter is scheduling automotive service at your auto shop. Ask your automotive repair technician to perform a thorough inspection of all the systems of your vehicle and of course, be sure to have any necessary automotive repair taken care of as soon as possible. This will ensure that you can drive your vehicle with peace of mind when heading out on icy and snowy roads.

Here is a list of automotive service issues to consider for safe winter driving:

  • Tires--Make sure the inflation pressure is correct, that the tread is adequate, that your wheels are in proper alignment, and that the tires have been rotated if necessary. You may want to have snow tires installed if you will be doing a lot of driving on snowy and icy roads.
  • Brakes--Make sure your brakes are working properly to meet the challenges of wet and icy roads. If you feel any vibration, hear squealing, or the brake pedal feels “soft,” have your brakes inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  • Car Battery--Check the level of battery fluid and clean any corrosive buildup from the terminals and cable clamps. Make sure your battery is holding a good charge as it will be getting a lot of use during winter’s dark days (especially if it is at least three years old).
  • Radiator-- Make sure the antifreeze/water mixture is at the correct level. Antifreeze protects the engine from excessive friction and overheating, as well as keeps the radiator from freezing up. It also protects your engine from corrosion, aids heat transfer, and prevents scale from building up internally.
  • Hoses and belts--Inspect for cracking, soft spots or other signs of poor condition.
  • Air filter--Replace the air filter to help keep the motor running smoothly.
  • Engine oil--Keep clean fresh oil in your car to help it run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Emergency kit--Even if going a short distance in bad weather, carry a supply of water, snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.
