Cannon auto repair
The average vehicle owner knows very little about transmission service. So when they hear their mechanic say that a "transmission repair" is required, all they can see are big dollar signs! However, if they do a little research ahead of time to gain a basic understanding of the various terms and methods of transmission repair, their confusion can be greatly diminished. They can make more knowledgeable decisions--whether their vehicle simply requires a minor transmission service, or whether a major transmission repair is necessary.

In-the-Car Repairs – Some problems can generally be taken care of with the transmission remaining in the vehicle. This makes the cost of repairs considerably less than a complete overhaul or replacement.

  • Shifting problems: A computer-controlled transmission can receive the wrong signals from the computer, or it may not react properly to a computer command. The computer may simply need to be reset. In non-computer-controlled units, the throttle cable or the vacuum modulator simply needs an adjustment. In some older transmissions, bands can be adjusted to resolve "slipping" gears.
  • Resealing of leaks: For most external fluid leaks, resealing can be taken care of with the transmission remaining in the car. But if the front seat needs to be replaced, the unit must first be removed from the vehicle in order to gain access to the leak.
Out-of-the-Car Repairs – Other types of transmission repair can only be resolved by removing the unit from the vehicle. Because these repairs require more hours of labor and involve components that may need to be replaced, they are considerably higher in cost and much more time-consuming.
  • Rebuilding: During this process, the transmission is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled. Each part is inspected for wear and damage. It is then either cleaned or replaced, depending on its condition. Parts that have friction surfaces, such as bands and clutches, seals, and gaskets, as well as the torque converter, are usually replaced.
  • Replacement: This option replaces the old transmission with another rebuilt or remanufactured unit. Although the most expensive option, it will get your vehicle out of the shop and back on the road the quickest.
