If you are tired of the constant hassle of tire repair, it may be time to purchase a new set of tires. This isn't an easy task, as there are dozens of styles and brands to choose from. There are several factors to take into account when purchasing new tires — mainly your style of driving and what is best for your particular vehicle. You don't have to purchase the most expensive ones in the store, or the ones you see most widely advertised.

Before making your decision as to what kind of tires to purchase, consider these three factors:

  • Performance. Think about the braking and road-handling abilities you need before setting a price point and making your purchase. The pattern of the tread and the composition materials play a significant role in setting the rate at which a car is capable of coming to a complete stop from highway speeds. Tires made from hard compounds are more likely to lock up when the brakes are firmly applied. Tires composed of soft compounds will break very quickly, but will also wear faster.
  • Price. Choosing the cheapest or the most expensive tires may not be your best choice. Middle-priced tires maybe your best option, as there is generally a wide range of features, such as long-lasting compounds, advanced tread patterns, and quality performance under a variety of road conditions.
  • Climate / Seasons. Don't forget about the weather when making your decision. Because colder climates are prone to ice and heavy snowfall, choose performance tires that are built to work well in snow and ice. You may need to purchase a second set made specifically for snowy conditions. For warmer or perpetually sunny climates there are more choices available, such as all-weather or all-season tires.

In other words, all tires are not equal! For optimum safety and performance, consider the three tips above to help you choose the right tires to fit your driving habits and conditions.
