As you step on the brake pedal, your vehicle's forward motion and the energy that it builds is converted into friction and heat. If your braking system is functioning correctly—you will slow down and then come to a complete stop. This process is repeated hundreds of times throughout the life of your vehicle without much thought until you start to notice a problem, like sliding through stop signs. Over time, the friction and heat created by the pads clamping down on the rotors begins to wear down the metal surface of the rotors. This problem can typically be resolved by a minor brake repair, but if neglected, a costly brake replacement will be headed your way.

  • Thin Rotors +

Overheating of brakes can be caused when the rotors get too thin and they lose their ability to channel heat away from the braking process. The combination of a rotor being too thin and too hot will keep the vehicle from stopping promptly. Unless the appropriate brake repair is made, several types of problems will appear--the pads get too hot and produce gases that cause the brakes to fade, rotors to warp, and worst of all, brake fluid to boil. This will lead to an expensive brake replacement.

  • Warped Rotors =

New rotors are smooth and flat and can stop a vehicle with very little vibration. The measure of this flatness is called run-out, and a difference as small as .001 of an inch off center can be felt when the brakes are applied. Rotors spin at a high revolution when the pads make contact. A warped rotor will produce vibrations when stopping. The pads also warp when they overheat, and then become scored with deep scars. When you start to notice more than usual vibration when braking, schedule a brake repair as soon possible!

  • Brake Replacement!

Many vehicle owners are tempted to be stingy when paying for brake repair. It can be the worst and last decision they ever make. When in doubt, the safest strategy is a complete brake replacement. It is probably the best investment a driver can make on their vehicle to ensure their safety and peace of mind. As the old saying goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
